A semi-truck driver is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he caused a series of 8 wrecks on Interstate 57 in the Chicago area before violently attacking another motorist.
According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred Tuesday morning when the driver allegedly triggered eight separate collisions while traveling northbound. The chain of crashes created a dangerous and chaotic scene on the highway, putting multiple drivers at risk.
Violent Confrontation After Final Crash
Police say the situation escalated even further after the final crash. The truck driver reportedly stopped his vehicle, exited the cab, and approached another driver involved in the wreckage.
Authorities allege he forcibly removed the victim from their vehicle and began physically assaulting them, including attempting to strangle the individual. The victim was later transported to a nearby hospital with injuries.
Arrest and Serious Criminal Charges
The suspect, identified as Hassan Moutassim, was taken into custody at the scene. He now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, aggravated battery in a public place, and aggravated battery involving strangulation.
Officials say he remains in custody as he awaits his initial court appearance. It is currently unclear whether he has legal representation.

Trucking Liability and the Responsibility of Hiring Safe Drivers
Incidents like this raise major concerns about how trucking companies vet and monitor their drivers. Operating a commercial semi-truck requires not only skill, but also sound judgment, emotional control, and strict adherence to safety standards.
Trucking companies have a legal duty to:
- Properly screen drivers before hiring, including background checks
- Ensure drivers are adequately trained and qualified
- Monitor behavior and remove unsafe drivers from the road
When a driver allegedly causes multiple crashes and engages in violent behavior, it raises serious questions about whether warning signs were missed—or ignored. In many cases, liability may extend beyond the driver to the company responsible for putting that individual behind the wheel.
Trucking Companies Must Be Held Accountable
There is no excuse for this level of danger on our roads. Semi-trucks are massive, high-risk vehicles, and the companies that operate them must be held to the highest possible standards when it comes to hiring, training, and oversight. When those standards are ignored, innocent people pay the price.
