EL SEGUNDO, CA- A Thursday night explosion and fire at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo sent massive flames and smoke billowing across the South Bay, alarming residents and rattling nearby communities. Around 9:30 p.m., witnesses reported feeling a powerful blast before seeing fireballs and smoke plumes light up the night sky.
Fire crews rushed to the scene as Chevron’s own refinery fire department, along with regional agencies, battled the blaze. By Friday morning, officials confirmed that the flames had largely subsided, though investigators continued working to determine the cause of the incident. Fortunately, all refinery personnel were accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
Investigation Underway as Residents Raise Safety Concerns
The city of El Segundo and Chevron confirmed there was no immediate public threat and no evacuation orders were issued. Air quality is being closely monitored, and so far, no dangerous exceedances have been detected.
Still, the blast left many residents shaken. From Redondo Beach to Manhattan Beach, people described feeling the ground shake and seeing towering flames that they mistook for a plane crash or earthquake. Smoke forced road closures along Rosecrans Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway, and even nearby soccer games were canceled as the heavy plumes drifted across the skies.
State and local leaders, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom, were briefed on the situation Thursday night. Officials pledged ongoing coordination to protect surrounding communities and ensure public safety.
Refinery’s Response and Community Impact
Chevron described the incident as an “isolated fire” and emphasized that there were no injuries and no evacuation needs. However, reports of flames soaring as high as 300 feet have left nearby families deeply shaken.
For decades, South Bay residents have lived alongside several major oil production facilities, but incidents like this reignite fears about long-term safety and environmental impact. Past refinery fires, including one at the same El Segundo facility in 2022, have heightened community concerns about whether enough is being done to protect those living nearby.
Finding Support and Justice After Unexpected Harm
At DJC Law, our thoughts are with everyone in El Segundo and the South Bay affected by this frightening refinery explosion. Even without reported injuries, the trauma of hearing blasts, seeing massive fireballs, or worrying about toxic smoke can leave lasting emotional and physical effects on families.
When unexpected industrial accidents happen, there are often difficult questions about responsibility, safety measures, and whether more could have been done to prevent them. No community should ever feel at risk in their own homes or while enjoying public spaces.
