Gunfire Erupts at Late-Night Gathering

A shooting in Amarillo early Saturday morning at Westminster Apartments left two teenagers dead and 10 others injured, according to the Amarillo Police Department.

Officers responded around 1:58 a.m. to reports of gunfire at the complex, located in the 2400 block of South Coulter Street. Authorities say the incident occurred during a gathering involving juveniles and young adults that had moved to the apartment complex from another location earlier in the night.

Suspects Allegedly Followed Victims Before Opening Fire

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted. According to police, several individuals had been asked to leave a previous gathering and later tracked attendees to the apartment complex.

Once there, the suspects allegedly attempted to enter before opening fire on the group, possibly using multiple weapons, including a rifle-style firearm. Evidence collected at the scene suggests more than one gun was involved.

Despite the scale of the violence, no arrests have been made, and authorities continue to review surveillance footage from nearby cameras and doorbell systems.

Victims Include Two Teenagers

Police identified one of the victims as 17-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan. A second victim, a 16-year-old male, has not yet been publicly named.

In addition to the two fatalities, 10 other individuals were injured. Officials have not released details about the extent of those injuries.

Investigators also recovered a Glock 9mm handgun near the scene, though it is unclear if it was used by one of the suspects.

Ongoing Investigation Amid Rising Violence

The shooting remains under active investigation as authorities work to identify and locate the two suspects. Police say the individuals may have had some connection to the location or attendees at the gathering.

Local officials have also pointed to an increase in violent incidents this year, with multiple homicides already reported in 2026. Law enforcement agencies have responded by increasing patrol presence and coordinating with regional partners.

Apartment Complex Liability and Security Responsibilities

Incidents like this raise serious questions about safety measures at apartment complexes. Property owners have a legal duty to maintain reasonably safe conditions for residents and guests. When violent crimes occur on-site—especially in areas with a known history of criminal activity—apartment management may be expected to take additional precautions.

This can include:

  • Adequate lighting in common areas
  • Functional gates, locks, and controlled access points
  • Security patrols or surveillance systems
  • Timely response to known safety concerns or prior incidents

If a property owner fails to address foreseeable risks or provide reasonable security measures, they may face liability under premises liability laws. These cases often depend on whether the danger was preventable and whether proper safeguards were in place.
