Early Morning Crash Shuts Down Interstate Traffic

A fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 64 left one man dead Friday morning after he was struck by a semi-truck in the westbound lanes near O’Fallon, according to the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police.
The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m., prompting a full closure of the roadway for nearly two hours while investigators conducted an accident reconstruction.
Victim Identified as Glen Carbon Man
Authorities identified the victim as 35-year-old Ethan Wood of Glen Carbon. Officials say Wood was walking in active traffic lanes when he was struck by a commercial semi-truck.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Wood was pronounced dead following the collision. No further details regarding the driver of the truck have been released at this time.
Investigation Underway Into How Crash Occurred
Illinois State Police is leading the investigation into the crash. Authorities have not yet clarified why the pedestrian was in the roadway or what factors may have contributed to the collision.
Traffic on the interstate was diverted while crash reconstruction teams documented the scene and gathered evidence. The roadway was later reopened after the investigation was completed.
Heightened Liability Standards for Semi-Truck Operations
Crashes involving commercial semi-trucks are treated very differently under the law compared to standard vehicle accidents. Truck drivers are required to hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which imposes stricter qualifications, training requirements, and ongoing safety obligations.
Because of the size and weight of commercial vehicles, truck drivers are held to a higher legal duty of care than ordinary motorists. They are expected to exercise heightened caution, maintain constant situational awareness, and comply with both federal and state safety regulations established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
In addition to the individual driver’s responsibility, trucking companies may also face liability depending on the circumstances. Employers are required to properly vet drivers, review prior safety records, ensure compliance with hours-of-service rules, and provide adequate training. When a crash occurs, investigators often examine whether:
- The driver was properly qualified and licensed
- The trucking company followed hiring and supervision protocols
- Safety regulations were violated (fatigue, speed, distraction, etc.)
- The incident could have been prevented with reasonable precautions
Even in cases involving unexpected pedestrian presence, commercial drivers are still expected to maintain a heightened level of awareness due to the severe risk posed by large tractor-trailers on public highways. These cases often require detailed reconstruction and regulatory review to determine fault and potential corporate responsibility.
