Routine Walk Turns Violent

A woman in Stockton is recovering after being viciously attacked by a group of stray dogs during what began as a normal walk near a levee, according to police and her family.

The incident occurred on April 23 near the 800 block of Carrie Street, where officers and animal services responded to reports of a dog attack. The victim was transported to a hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries.

Attack Escalates Within Moments

According to her daughter, the situation unfolded rapidly after the woman noticed several stray dogs approaching. She began recording them on her phone, initially intending to document their presence.

Moments later, the dogs reportedly became aggressive and launched a full attack. The victim attempted to defend herself using her bag while calling out for help, but the force of the attack left her unable to escape.

Rescued by Nearby Residents

During the attack, the dogs reportedly dragged the woman down an embankment near the levee. Her daughter says nearby residents intervened and were ultimately responsible for saving her life.

The family expressed deep gratitude toward the individuals who stepped in, emphasizing that their quick actions likely prevented an even more tragic outcome.

Extensive Injuries and Long Recovery Ahead

The victim suffered between 150 and 200 wounds, including lacerations and punctures across her face, head, neck, arms, legs, and torso. She lost a significant amount of blood and underwent emergency surgery that lasted approximately six hours.

After spending several days in the hospital, she has since been released and is continuing her recovery, focusing on both physical healing and emotional trauma. Her family says she is showing steady progress.

Search Continues for Remaining Dogs

Authorities report that two of the dogs involved have been captured, but several others—estimated to be five or six—remain at large. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to locate the remaining animals.

Police are urging residents not to approach any stray dogs matching the description and to immediately report sightings to local animal services.

Legal Questions Surrounding Stray Dog Attacks

Incidents involving stray or uncontrolled dogs can present complex legal challenges. Liability may depend on whether the animals had known ownership, if prior complaints were made, or whether local authorities failed to address a known danger. In some cases, property owners or municipalities may face scrutiny if hazardous conditions contributed to the attack.

These cases often require thorough investigation to determine accountability and ensure victims receive proper support.
