Honduras Plane Crash in Caribbean: Government Still Hasn’t Recovered Wreckage
Honduras plane crash in the Caribbean; ongoing recovery efforts by the government remain insufficient.

On March 17, 2025, a plane crash in the Caribbean Sea took the lives of 12 individuals when an aircraft traveling from Roatán Island to La Ceiba went down during what should have been a routine flight across Honduras' northern coast. The tragedy has left families and communities devastated, marking another deadly aviation incident in the region.

Among the victims was Aurelio Martínez, a devoted husband, loving father, renowned musical icon, former congressman, and passionate Garifuna advocate. His loss, alongside the others who perished, has left a profound impact on their families and communities. Attorney Andrés Pereira, representing Martínez’s family, has emphasized that retrieving the airplane from the sea is crucial for justice and closure.

Preliminary findings indicate that the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure approximately one minute after takeoff, resulting in a loss of engine power. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Aerolínea Lanhsa suspended all operations in April 2025, pending further investigation. Four months have passed, and families are still waiting for the wreckage to be brought to the surface, hoping that the story of this flight will eventually lead to answers and accountability.

Featured in the Rolex Mentorship Program, this video captures the essence of Aurelio Martínez: his artistry, leadership, cultural devotion, and the enduring legacy that continues to inspire long after his passing.
