QUEENS, NY – Two pilots were killed and dozens of others were injured after an Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire truck while landing at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night.
According to Port Authority officials, a CRJ-900 jet operating as Air Canada Express Flight 8646 was landing at LaGuardia Airport around 11:40 p.m. on Sunday when it collided with a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle on the runway. The plane had flown from Montreal carrying 72 passengers and four crew members.
The fire truck had reportedly been responding to an unrelated incident and crossed the runway into the jet’s path. The collision sheared off much of the plane’s nose and overturned the fire truck. The two pilots aboard the aircraft were killed. Two officers in the fire truck, identified as Sgt. Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez, were among dozens injured. Forty-one people were transported to the hospital, and some remain in serious condition.
Authorities Working to Determine Cause of Runway Collision
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched a team to LaGuardia Airport to investigate the collision. Air traffic control recordings from the incident suggest that a controller attempted to stop the fire truck multiple times before the crash occurred.
Runway incursions and ground vehicle collisions at airports can result from a number of contributing factors. When incidents like this occur, investigators often review:
- Communication breakdowns between air traffic control and ground vehicles
- Whether proper runway crossing protocols were followed
- Visibility conditions and situational awareness at the time of the incident
- Airport ground traffic management procedures and safety oversight
Federal aviation and workplace safety agencies may also review the incident to determine whether existing procedures, training, and safety systems were adequate.
Runway Incursions Remain a Serious Aviation Safety Concern
Airports are complex environments where aircraft, ground vehicles, and emergency equipment operate in close proximity, often at high speeds. When coordination between these elements breaks down, the results can be catastrophic.
- Runway incursions — when an unauthorized vehicle, person, or aircraft enters an active runway — are among the most dangerous events in aviation. Even seconds of miscommunication can lead to devastating collisions.
- Tragedies like this underscore the critical importance of strict runway safety protocols, clear communication systems, and thorough training for all personnel operating on airport grounds.
Supporting Families After an Aviation Tragedy
At DJC Law, our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the two pilots who lost their lives in this devastating accident at LaGuardia Airport, as well as to all the passengers and crew members who were injured.
When fatal aviation incidents occur, families are often left with painful questions about what happened and whether the tragedy could have been prevented. Passengers, flight crews, and airport workers all deserve safe environments, proper protocols, and effective safety systems.
In some cases, further investigation can reveal whether negligence, communication failures, inadequate safety procedures, or failures in oversight contributed to a deadly accident.
If your family has lost a loved one or you were injured in an aviation accident, you may have legal options to seek accountability and support during an incredibly difficult time.
